Building The Dream
After re- designing their first restaurant in Oak Creek Wisconsin the Liapis Brothers, Pete and Louie, asked me to entertain the idea of designing a new construction based on their tree fort hangout theme in Mount Pleasant WI. Here are the process images that led to one of the largest design build projects I have had the honor of creating. From the walls and tables, the menu board and tree takeout window down to the exterior stamped concrete I designed this fully fledged tree fort hangout! I must include a great Thank You to the Liapis family for allowing me to “branch out” and do major scale design, construction and fabrication of this public landmark.
This client commissioned me to design and construct a Spanish Arch themed retractable sunshade. Out in Sand Canyon I worked with an old English wheel and a plasma cutter to build these large steel leaves. After bending and welding the arched armature truss it had to be anchored into poured concrete pilings which I also fabricated by digging a 6 foot deep by 3 foot diameter hole and filling with over 20 80Lb. bags of hand mixed cement. After the truss was completed I was able to patina the leaves and weld them to the structure. Finally the client and I devised a way to re-purpose the motor and roller from an existing vertical shade to make the shade fabric retract automatically.
